Greetings!!
The new schedule has been a success thus far! The feedback from students has been incredibly positive! We will continue working with the students on strategies to keep them organized and all of their assignments written down in their planners. If your student has still not gotten a planner, let me know and we can find them one. I know they have some at the dollar store that work great.
Totems
As part of the new schedule we have created our class tribes. This is a way to keep our homeroom class culture and also incorporate that all the 5th grade classes belong to a larger community we are calling The Nation. Students made a totem out of the boxes that they brought that represents themselves. We read about spirit animals in reading, wrote poems about their totem in writing and measured the volume and surface area of their totem in math. We will put the totems all together to create a totem pole in front of all the 5th grade classes. Pictures to come!!
Passion Projects
Students are working on Passion Project journals to help with the brainstorm process for exhibition. They are to look for articles about issues they are passionate about or articles on things they enjoy as a way to express themselves. Art, mountain biking, poverty, animals; really anything. They will use the articles to learn more about these subjects and think about different possibilities to use these subjects for their exhibition. If they could bring in one article for next week that would be great! I am also helping students find articles and printing them at school. The newspaper and magazines also work great.
On another note, I will have a substitute all next week. Mrs. Laird's daughter, Hailey Laird will be in the class and is informed about everything the students are doing. Please feel free to e-mail though. I am around a computer and can get back to you if you have questions!
Thank you for all your support!!!
