Dear Sage Families,
The fifth grade team would like to introduce you to the Fifth Grade Nation. Our vision is to create cohesive Units of Inquiry through in-depth knowledge, communication and collaboration. When we return from winter break, we will be focusing our instruction to meet the combined demands of content standards and PYP curriculum. As a team, we will continue to plan engaging, guided inquiry units; however, we will each specialize in one content area:
Mrs. Johnson —Reading/Inquiry
Mrs. Laird—ELA/Inquiry
Mrs. Larson—Math/Inquiry
Our goal is to “develop students’ academic, social and emotional wellbeing, focusing on international-mindedness and strong personal values. The PYP nurtures independent learning skills, encouraging every student to take responsibility for their learning,” (IB.org. 30, 2015). Specializing instruction will allow our team to:
- Plan Inquiry units with transdisciplinary themes throughout each content area, including math
- Bridge the gap from PYP to MYP, scaffolding responsibility
- Create a “Nation” where students inquire and collaborate in a global manner and act
- Create relationships with all fifth grade students to increase student communication skills
- Focus on one content improving knowledge of student needs in that area
- Focus on excellent instructional strategies to engage all learners
